A spill containment pallet is essential whenever potentially polluting, flammable, or toxic substances are stored. It acts as a passive safety system to intercept accidental spills from tanks, drums, or IBCs, preventing liquids from reaching the ground, sewage systems, or groundwater. It is crucial in workshops, production sites, and transfer areas to ensure environmental protection and occupational safety, preventing ecological disasters and costly remediation efforts.

Yes, the basins must be accompanied by declarations of conformity and technical documentation from the manufacturer. Although there is no single universal certification, they must comply with construction standards relating to materials (steel or polyethylene) and chemical resistance. A certified basin guarantees that watertightness tests and structural tests have been carried out, ensuring that the system can withstand the hydrostatic load of liquids in an emergency, thus ensuring maximum operational reliability.

The minimum capacity of a containment sump must meet precise technical criteria: it must be able to contain at least 33% of the total volume of stored containers, or 100% of the volume of the largest container, always choosing the greater value. In areas subject to groundwater protection, the containment volume must always be equal to 100% of the total stored. Proper design ensures that the basin does not overflow in the event of simultaneous failure or massive spillage.

The installation of a containment bund is mandatory by law (Legislative Decree 152/06 and regional regulations) when hazardous or polluting liquids are stored, such as waste oils, chemicals, solvents or hydrocarbons. The regulation aims to prevent environmental risks arising from structural leaks in primary containers. The absence of compliant containment systems exposes the company to heavy administrative and criminal penalties, as well as civil liability in the event of accidental spills into the subsoil.

For the storage of food liquids, it is essential to choose materials that comply with MOCA (Materials and Articles in Contact with Food) regulations. AISI 304 or 316L stainless steel is the material of choice due to its chemical inertness, ease of sanitization, and corrosion resistance. Alternatively, virgin food-grade certified polyethylene is used. The choice must also consider the liquid's temperature and the need for non-standard designs to adapt to specific production volumes and spaces.
