The quantity and nature of the product, initial and target temperatures, available time, container material and ambient temperature are all needed. Insulation and the heated surface area also affect the result. Capacity in litres alone is not enough to determine the power rating: a system for temperature maintenance may have different requirements from one intended for the initial heating of a viscous product.

Not necessarily. The thermostat regulates the system based on the temperature measured by its sensor, whose position varies between models. The temperature of the contents also depends on heat transfer, volume and product properties. The heater’s adjustment range therefore does not guarantee that all the liquid will reach the same temperature, nor does it permit the container’s temperature limits to be exceeded.

Bands, jackets and base heaters transfer heat through the container without introducing the heating element into the product. Immersion heaters instead transfer heat directly to the fluid: they require chemical compatibility of the materials in contact with it and compliance with the minimum liquid level. The choice must also take account of tank accessibility, viscosity and process requirements.
